JOHN BARRETT NOTES:
24 August 1964
"THE BEATLES AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL"
(ORIGINAL EDITED TAPE)

Also recorded this day (from the John Barrett notes):

This is the only reel recorded this day.

AVAILABLE RECORDINGS:

This appears to be the master multi-track tape for the recording of The Beatles' 23 August 1964 concert at this venue. At some point, a section of leader tape was inserted into the center of the reel to divide it into two segments for an LP. This reel remained in the possession of Capitol Records until mod 1969 when it was finally sent to the E.M.I. archives.

Note the notation "AR1453". This would appear to reference another reel of tape. John Barrett logs reel AR1454 as the original 27 August 1964 stereo mix and it is commonly believed that the available mono copies are simply the stereo mix folded to mono.

Did Barrett simply write the wrong digit or might AR1453 be a mono mix?

UNAUTHORIZED RELEASES:

This recording has been available since 1970. Until 1993, all releases were sourced from a mono acetate prepared 30 September 1966 (see the acetate and additional info - here). One such release is Back In 1964 At The Hollywood Bowl (released on a variety of labels).

In 1993, the original mono tape surfaced on Hollywood Bowl Complete (Yellow Dog). In 1997, the stereo tape surfaced on The Complete Hollywood Bowl Concerts 1964-65 (Midnight Beat). These releases have subsequently appeared on a variety of unauthorized releases.

OFFICIAL RELEASES:

The first 46 seconds of "Twist And Shout" first surfaced on the Capitol documentary album, The Beatles' Story in 1964.

In 1976, work began on the official
Hollywood Bowl album. The official album used performances from this concert along with performances from the 1965 Hollywood Bowl concert. The songs chosen from this show are:

All My Loving
She Loves You
Things We Said Today
Roll Over Bethoven
Boys
Long Tall Sally

To date, the official Hollywood Bowl album has not been officially released on CD however, unauthorized CDs, sourced from the original vinyl LPs, circulate among collectors.
