According to the liner notes from "Help! Original Mix", these are Twickenham 78 rpm discs (I would assume single-sided). Neither Doug Sulpy nor John Winn reference that designation. Indeed, these discs are a bit of a mystery. With the exception of "Help!", the official recording dates for all these songs were 15 - 19 February 1965 and mixed 20 - 23 Febuary 1965. The official mono mixes are all RM1s but the mixes featured here are each different to some degree. In addition, these mixes feature title announcements and count-ins. So where do these mixes originate? Lewisohn mentions, on 22 February 1965, The Beatles took "a copy tape of all 11 remixes" with them to the Bahamas for Walter Shenson and Dick Lester. However, it seems unlikely to be the source for these recordings. John Barrett's notes (seen - here) offer no real evidence. |
